I’m never sure if im safe to talk about my “Mental Health” at work
You’re so right about this and it sucks that a lot of employers are still not accepting of this and there’s still SO much stigma! I think it’s great that you brought this up here - wonder what others think about this
thanks for sharing the article, and i totally understand how tough it can be to bring up mental health at work, especially in malaysia where the stigma is still VERY real. as a country, we still have a lot of work to do—not just in raising awareness but also in fostering more understanding, acceptance, and empathy for those dealing with mental health issues. it’s frustrating when being vulnerable about your mental health could backfire yet you’re still encouraged to be open. that disconnect really makes it hard to know what to do.
if you’re feeling hesitant, it might help to start small. maybe you could test the waters by talking to someone you trust in the workplace—perhaps a colleague or even HR—about general topics like wellness or stress management. you could gauge how open they are before diving into more personal mental health details. sometimes approaching it from a more neutral angle gives you insight into how supportive the environment is.
if your company offers an employee assistance programme (eap), that could be a safer, more confidential route to get support without fear of judgment. even if your direct boss is difficult to talk to, there might be other avenues available, like HR or well-being initiatives.
most importantly, remember that your mental health matters just as much as your physical health and you have every right to seek support. even if it feels tough right now, you don’t have to face it alone. exploring outside resources, like therapy or support groups, could also help you manage your situation.
we hope to bring more acceptance to MH in time

You’re so right! I don’t feel comfortable either talking about mental health at work. I have a colleague who shared her MDD diagnosis with her manager and ended up being passed over for a promotion, probably because they assumed she couldn’t handle the workload or that her diagnosis would affect her performance. It’s so unfair and sad.
Another colleague has a diagnosis too but she hasn’t told any of the bosses, just a few of us close coworkers in case she needs support when things get tough. It’s crazy how they push mental health initiatives but there’s still no real psychological safety to actually share what we’re going through.
Maybe you could start by sharing this with a close colleague or if there’s any way to give feedback to HR, this might be something they could look into! It would be great if bosses got trained to better understand and support mental health struggles!!
